Purpose and values

warmup.jpg

Our purpose is to act as a catalyst for clients to help them solve complex problems; break through the organisational challenges standing in the way of action; and take advantage of opportunities before competitors.

Our values are in our name, “ethos”: “character” to the ancient Greeks and today defined as a “collective set of common values and practices”.

Its many roots include ethics, credibility, good judgement, intelligence, practical experience, realization of potential, good will.   Qualities that are essential to adding value to clients; creating a culture where are teams can thrive; and selecting the kind of partner firms who share our values.  The name “ethos” and all of its connotations summarise our “right to play” as advisers to our clients and as a firm that can attract leading talent.

Aristotle and ethos

Yes, going way back here.  Aristotle co-opted ethos, added pathos (empathy) and logos (logic) to his views on rhetoric and what it takes to build a persuasive argument that gets an audience to buy in to a point of view or recommendation.  He further defined the qualities that someone with “ethos”/character needed to have:

  • Intelligence,  knowledge of facts relevant to practical action; experience and the good judgement to know how to apply it (phronesis)

  • Excellence, full realisation of potential to achieve results (arete)

  • Good will; being friendly and wanting to help (eunoia)

These are qualities essential to doing what we do successfully.
